About the Guild


Overview
The Providence Newspaper Guild represents 300 employees of the Providence Journal, 50 employees at the Times and the Call in northern Rhode Island and 150 at the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. It's part of the Newspaper Guild, which is part of the Communications Workers of America, an AFL-CIO affiliate.

Mission
The purpose of the Guild shall be to advance the economic interests and to improve the working conditions of its members; to guarantee, as far as it is able, equal employment and advancement opportunity in the industry and constant honesty in news, editorials, advertising, and business practices; to raise the standards of journalism and ethics of the industry; to foster friendly cooperation with all other workers; and to promote industrial unionism within the jurisdiction of the Guild. -- Article 1, Section 2 TNG-CWA Constitution


President
John Hill is a regional bureau manager in the ProJo News Department's Lincoln State Staff Bureau. He served as secretary from 1997 to 2003. He has worked at the Journal since 1988.
Guild Officers and Executive Board Members

The Guild's officers are elected annually and take office at the June membership meeting.


Vice President
Del St.Jean is an outside sales representative in the ProJo Advertising Department. He has served on the executive committee since 2000. He has worked at the Journal since 1991.


Secretary
Thom Cahir is an Editorial Assistant in the News department. He was elected to the Executive Committee in 2001.He became secretary in 2003.

Treasurer
Greg Smith is a reporter on the ProJo News Department's city Staff. He has worked at the Journal since 1972. He has served as treasurer since 1990. Prior to that he served one year as secretary.

At-large Member
Karen Ziner is a reporter in the News Department. She has worked at the Journal since 1979. She has served on the Executive Committee since 2004.


At-large Member
Felice Freyer is a special writer on the ProJo News Department City Staff. She has worked at the Journal since 1982. She has served on the Executive Committee since June 1994.

At-large Member
Elaine Boyd works as a bookkeeper in the ProJo Advertising Credit Department. She has served on the executive committee since 2007. She has worked at the Journal since 1993.

At-large Member
Kerry Kohring is a section editor in the ProJo News Department. He has worked at the Journal since 1974. He has served on the Executive Committee since June 1995. He also served on the negotiating committee for the current contract.

At-large Member
Kate Levesque works in the ProJo Pre-Publishing Department. She was elected to the Executive Committee in 2008.

At-large Member
Lisa Buben is an outside sales representative in the ProJo Advertising Department. She has served on the executive committee since 2005. She previously served two years on the Providence Unit Council. She has worked at the Journal since 1993.


At-large Member
Jon Baker is an outside saler representative in the ProJo Advertising Department. He joined the executive committee in 2007. He has worked at the Journal since 2005.
