Contract 2000

Guild Bargaining Bulletin #2

The Guild and the Journal reached tentative agreements on five issues Friday (Nov. 5) on mostly "housekeeping" items, dealing with the elimination of obsolete language. Partial agreements were reached in several other areas.

The Guild also detailed and explained proposals related to part-time and irregular extra benefits. The Company said it would review these issues.

The Company indicated it is open to combining the two contracts into a single document, while maintaining the distinction between the news and advertising bargaining units.

The Company took a dim view of Guild proposals dealing with job sharing and part-time work during maternity leave.

"It goes too far on how the Company assigns people and manages work," said ProJo spokesman Rick Perras. "We don't want to give up discretion."

The Company also was cool to proposals regarding posting of transfer opportunities, and part-time and irregular extra scheduling.

"Management wants continued flexibility in scheduling" Perras said.

The Company also said it wanted the right to shut down the fitness center.

The next negotiating sessions have been scheduled for November 12, and November 19. They will begin at 10 a.m. in the Human Resources conference room.

The Guild's proposal is available on-line at the PNG web site:
