Contract 2000
The negotiating room, packed with over a dozen spectators Friday (Dec 17), was silent except for the voice of Guild member Bettina Packard. Hands shaking, voice quivering, she related the details of a series of personal medical care crises she has faced in recent years. She concluded: "I couldn't wait to become a member of the Promotion department team. This further allowed me to become a Guild member and sign up for Classic Blue. With Classic Blue as my health care provider I have had peace of mind ever since. But now this is being taken way." As she finished, she was overcome with tears. But she was not alone. Company negotiators visibly affected immediately asked for a caucus to regain their own composure. After hearing from two other Guild workers, Joe LaPlante and Sandra Martins who detailed their own medical needs, the company began a series of constructive proposals, suggesting a willingness to reconsider their position regarding Blue Cross, and making the first substantive agreements in the current round of negotiations. The Company said it wants Blue Cross to express its willingness to issue insurance for Guild members. If Blue Cross does this, "we will consider it," said Company negotiator Rick Perras. The Company accepted a Guild proposal to substantially increase the small grid payments for employees filling in for managers. This represents the biggest overhaul in these amounts in over a decade. The two sides neared agreement on several other contract provisions covering pre-tax spending accounts for medical and child care expenses and on adding a confidential employee assistance plan to the benefits offered Guild members. The next negotiating sessions are set for Dec. 22, 28 and 29.
