QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT THE PROVIDENCE NEWSPAPER GUILD’S BOYCOTT

QUESTION: When will the boycott begin?
ANSWER
: When the Guild believes that it has exhausted all attempts to get The Providence Journal and its new Texas owners to bargain a fair contract.

Q: How will I know the boycott has started?
A:
The Guild will notify you personally, based on the information on your pledge card, and we will tell your union as well.

Q: I don’t get the paper at home. How can I participate in the boycott?
A:
Pledge not to buy it at the store, supermarket, vending machine.

Q: I depend on The Providence Journal for my news. Where am I going to get information during the boycott?
A:
We know that giving up the paper – for what we hope will only be a short while – will be hard on readers, as it is on the men and women who produce what we think is a great newspaper. For those of you with home computers hooked up to the Internet, we refer you to two Web sites:
www.riguild.org This is the Guild’s own site, and we’ll make sure it’s chock full of information. We will have links to some of the best local and national news sources.
www.projo.com We also recommend The Providence Journal’s Web site. It’s FREE, and it has all the news of the day from the newspaper, and a whole lot more. It is produced proudly by the men and women of the Providence Newspaper Guild.

Other sources of news include Channels 6, 10 and 12, along with the major radio stations and Rhode Island’s statewide weekly newspaper, The Providence Phoenix. In addition, we recommend the state’s excellent National Public Radio station: WNRI, with two AM dial positions: 1290 and 1230.

Q: What happens after the boycott?
A:
We want you to resume buying the newspaper. We will restart your subscription and let you know that we’ve done so. We don’t want you to abandon the paper. We just need your help in getting your fellow union members a good contract and fighting the attempt to break us.

Q: What if The Journal keeps delivering the newspaper after the boycott begins?
A:
You don’t have to pay for papers you have asked not to receive.

Q: How else can I help?
A:
You can write to Howard G. Sutton, publisher, Providence Journal, 75 Fountain St., Providence, RI 02902; or call him, (401) 277-7521. Ask him to stop mistreating his workers and attacking their union.
