BOYCOTT
DON’T LET THE PROVIDENCE JOURNAL
BUST OUR UNION!

Rhode Island union men and women join members of the Providence Newspaper Guild in a June 16, 2000 rally to keep the Providence Journal from wrecking its largest union.

Dear Union Member,

Janitors, clerks, reporters, advertising sales representatives, editors and other workers at the Providence Journal – proud members of the Providence Newspaper Guild – need your help.
Local managers of the newspaper, and the paper’s new Texas owners, are trying to kill our union. They’ve imposed inferior medical plans, denied us benefits enjoyed by other workers, taken away a holiday, stopped dues checkoff, filed frivolous lawsuits and tried to get members to quit.
We are fighting back.
We mean to hit the newspaper in the only place that it cares about: its bank account.
We are planning a circulation boycott: asking thousands of union women and men not to buy the paper.
Enclosed is a pledge card. Please sign it and return it to us as soon as possible.

• It authorizes us to cancel your Providence Journal subscription, if and when we declare the boycott.

• If you don’t get the paper delivered at home, the card will tell the paper that you won’t buy it at the newsstand.

The information on the card will allow us to keep you up to date on the progress of the boycott. When the boycott is over, we will restart your subscription.
Thanks for your support. This is one of the most important fights facing organized labor in Rhode Island this year. Not only are the jobs of 500 men and women at stake, but also the ability of a union to keep the state’s biggest paper honest.
